Recent data from the #nyhealthfoundation highlights a serious challenge facing our veteran community. New York is home to approximately 560,000 veterans, and newly released federal data show that veteran suicide rates in New York increased sharply in 2023, reaching 24.9 per 100,000 β€” more than twice the rate of the general population.
These numbers remind us why the work being done across our communities is so important. At Homeward Bound Adirondacks, we are committed to helping veterans reconnect, heal, and rediscover purpose. Through our three-day nature retreats, peer-to-peer support, and wellness programs, veterans have an opportunity to step away from daily stress, build trust with fellow veterans, and experience the healing power of nature here in the Adirondacks. Many veterans who attend our retreats share that simply being surrounded by others who understand their experiences can make a powerful difference. Connection, community, and time in nature can play an important role in preventing isolation and supporting mental health. While the challenges are real, veteran suicide is preventable, and together we can continue working to ensure that no veteran feels alone.
If you or a veteran you know is struggling, help is available.
